The sweet smell of autumn decay. The trail isn't seen so much as it is felt, obscured by a blanket of leaves to the point that every root is suddenly jarring at the same time that the glide of tires over every surface is softened and muted.
Looking up the trail through the low-angled light and palate of colors, it's the best time of year.
