Yesterday was a momentous annual event in the life of a cyclist: the first day of the year when you ride with no Arm Warmers, no Knee Warmers - start to finish. This first day of the year is very exciting, always a little anxious (am I going to be cold and two hours from home?) and comes with additional pluses and minuses around town:
+ Unsightly winter paleness is now just a matter of time before it is replaced with summer office paleness.
- Fruit Boots (and fruit booters) taking up meandering chunks of pathway.
+ Inappropriate exercise apparel on pathway users.
-A new breed is emerging: the hipster leisure cyclist. People who have never spent any time on a bike are 'rediscovering' cycling on single-speed/fixed-gear creations with narrow handlebars and one or no brakes. This is only going to get ugly...
