I know Kate is tough, but in the photo above she has just ridden through a wall. A temperature wall, that is - that literally went from -10 to +5 in the span of 100 meters. When you ride through that, it's noticeable to the same effect as stepping into the heat of a hair dryer - and quite pleasant.
I'm getting over a bit of a wall myself. This one is the initial hump of winter inactivity. Those first dew rides where you feel unusually labored after 90 minutes, and complete shattered by 3 hours.
It's a healthy process, and a reminder that fitness is sometimes taken for granted. Even after years of repetition, it feels hard to believe only a matter of weeks will erase the discomfort, and after a few more months the full sensation returns.
Years after year this happens, and it makes me wonder how big the wall must feel without the benefit of past experience. The human body is amazing in its ability to adapt and strengthen, but what if you've never been there before? What would drive the motivation?
For now I will enjoy the ride a lot, and suffer a little, being glad to know!
